Grey Iron & Ductile SG Iron Castings
Esteem Auto is an iron casting manufacturer based at Metoda GIDC in Rajkot, Gujarat, India, producing grey iron and ductile SG iron castings for automotive, agricultural, industrial machinery and infrastructure applications. The grey iron range runs from ISO 185 grade 100 through 350, equivalent to ASTM A48 No.20 to No.60 and IS 210 FG150 to FG400, while ductile iron covers ISO 1083 400-15 through 900-2, equivalent to ASTM A536 60-40-18 to 120-90-02 and IS 1865 SG370/17 to SG800/2.
Every grade is cross-referenced across 15 national standards including ISO, ASTM, DIN, EN, JIS, BS, IS, GB, UNI, NF, AS, SS and NS, so an overseas buyer can specify a grade in their own standard and receive a matching casting without converting it first. Mechanical properties are published to EN 1563:2011: EN-GJS-500-7, for example, delivers 500 MPa tensile strength, 320 MPa yield, 7 percent elongation and 170-230 HB.
Grade selection follows the duty the part must handle. Grey iron’s flake graphite structure gives excellent vibration damping, thermal conductivity and machinability, which suits engine, brake and housing components. Ductile iron’s spheroidal graphite delivers far higher tensile strength and impact resistance for load-bearing and safety-critical parts. Castings are produced by green sand and shell mould processes according to tolerance and volume.
Chemical composition is verified by spectrometer, graphite structure and nodularity examined on a metallurgical microscope, and hardness and tensile properties confirmed on hardness testers and a computerised universal testing machine, with dimensions checked on a coordinate measuring machine. Castings are finish-machined in-house and exported to more than 50 countries.

Iron Casting FAQs
Which grey iron and ductile iron grades does Esteem Auto cast?
Esteem Auto casts the full grey iron range from ISO 185 grade 100 through 350 (ASTM A48 No.20 to No.60, IS 210 FG150 to FG400) and ductile SG iron from ISO 1083 400-15 through 900-2 (ASTM A536 60-40-18 to 120-90-02, IS 1865 SG370/17 to SG800/2). Grade is selected to match the strength, hardness and elongation your part requires.
Can Esteem Auto supply iron castings to DIN, JIS, EN, BS or IS standards?
Yes. Castings are produced to whichever national standard your drawing specifies, with equivalence mapped across 15 standards including ISO, ASTM, DIN, EN, JIS, BS, IS, GB, UNI, NF, AS, SS and NS. Buyers can quote a grade in their own standard and receive a matching casting, which removes the conversion step from overseas enquiries.
Is SG iron the same as ductile iron and nodular graphite iron?
Yes, all three describe the same material. Spheroidal graphite (SG) iron, ductile iron and nodular graphite iron are regional names for cast iron in which magnesium treatment forms the graphite into spheres rather than flakes, giving far higher tensile strength and elongation than grey iron. Esteem Auto uses the terms interchangeably across standards.
What do the three numbers in an ASTM A536 grade such as 60-40-18 mean?
They state the minimum mechanical properties in order: 60,000 psi tensile strength, 40,000 psi yield strength and 18 percent elongation. So 60-40-18 is a softer, more ductile grade, while 100-70-03 gives 100,000 psi tensile with only 3 percent elongation. Choosing between them is a trade-off between strength and ductility.
What does the class number mean in ASTM A48 grey iron?
The class number is the minimum tensile strength in thousands of psi. ASTM A48 Class 30 means a minimum of 30,000 psi, Class 40 means 40,000 psi, and so on up to Class 60. Higher classes are stronger and harder but slightly less machinable, so the class is chosen against the loads and machining the part will see.
What is the ASTM or Indian equivalent of DIN GGG 40 ductile iron?
DIN 1693 GGG 40 corresponds to EN-GJS-400-15 under EN 1563, ASTM A536 60-40-18, BS 2789 grade 420/12 and IS 1865 SG400/12. Esteem Auto's grade tables map grey and ductile iron equivalents across ISO, ASTM, DIN, EN, JIS, BS, IS and other standards so buyers can confirm the match before ordering.
What are the mechanical properties of EN-GJS-500-7 ductile iron?
EN-GJS-500-7 to EN 1563:2011 provides 500 MPa minimum tensile strength, 320 MPa yield strength, 7 percent elongation and a hardness of roughly 170-230 HB. It is one of the most widely specified general-purpose ductile grades, balancing strength and ductility for machinery, automotive and hydraulic components.
How do I choose between a high-elongation and a high-strength ductile iron grade?
Match the grade to the loading. EN-GJS-400-18 offers 400 MPa tensile with 18 percent elongation and 130-175 HB, suiting parts that must absorb shock or impact. EN-GJS-700-2 gives 700 MPa and 225-305 HB but only 2 percent elongation, suiting high-load wear parts. Higher strength always costs ductility and machinability.
What is nodularity and why does it matter in SG iron castings?
Nodularity measures how spherical the graphite particles are within the iron. High nodularity gives the strength, ductility and fatigue resistance expected of SG iron, while poor nodularity leaves flake-like graphite that behaves closer to grey iron. It is assessed on a metallurgical microscope, which is why microstructure is checked alongside chemical composition.
What is the difference between cast iron and cast steel?
Cast iron has a higher carbon content, typically two to four percent, which forms free graphite. That gives excellent castability, vibration damping and machinability but lower ductility. Cast steel holds carbon below roughly two percent with no free graphite, giving higher toughness and weldability at greater cost. Esteem Auto casts both, so selection is driven by the application.
How is the metallurgy of an iron casting verified before dispatch?
Chemical composition is confirmed on a spectrometer, graphite structure and nodularity are examined on a metallurgical microscope, and hardness and tensile properties are checked on hardness testers and a computerised universal testing machine. This confirms the casting genuinely meets the specified grade rather than only matching it dimensionally.
Can material test reports be supplied with iron casting orders?
Yes, on request. Because chemical composition is verified by spectrometer and mechanical properties on a computerised universal testing machine in-house, test data can be reported against the specified grade with the consignment. This is commonly required by OEM procurement and for export documentation, and works alongside our IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 systems.
